Pelvimeter

A pelvimeter is a smooth stainless steel measuring device that is used to assess the diameter of the female pelvis prior to childbirth in order to ascertain whether childbirth via natural vaginal delivery is possible or not. There are two main types of pelvimeters including the external and the internal pelvimeter.

The main parts of the external pelvimeter are two bulbed arms attached at a pivot and a hinged ruler in the shape of an arc that is calibrated in centimeters and inches. The specialized instrument is used to take two external measurements of the pelvis; the distance between two external angles of ilia and the distance between two ischial tuberosities, which are used to calculate the pelvic diameter. The internal pelvimeter is a hinged instrument with two internally bent, bulbed blades, a pivot and two handles. It is gently inserted into the patient’s rectum to measure the vertical and horizontal pelvic diameters. The Surtex Pelvimeters are manufactured in different designs including the Martin Pelvimeter for external pelvic measurements and the DeleePelvimeter for internal pelvic measurements through the rectum.

The bulbed ends ensure minimal patient discomfort and reduces risk of perineal or vaginal trauma. Every Surtex Pelvimeter is made with premium grade stainless steel, electro polished to give a satin finish.
