Keratomes and Knives Keratomes and knives are ophthalmic instruments used during surgery to dissect or scrape different layers of the cornea, from the surface epithelium to deeper layers such as Descemet’s membrane or the endothelium. Generally, the principal parts of keratomes and knives are a flat comfortable handle, and a blade which changes in form and angle depending of the instrument’s pattern.

In artificial pupil by separation surgery, the surgeon usually performs a puncture at a part of the cornea where there is no adhesion to the iris, avoiding the prolapsed piece of iris to be readily retained; this feature is performed using a Jaeger Keratome Fig, an ophthalmic surgical knife provided with a triangular, sharp-pointed blade, manufactured following two patterns: flat and angled head distal end.
